The “Story” Behind the Two Minute Tune-Up
Do you run out of energy before you run out of your day?
As a relaxation coach, the most common complaint I hear is: “I don’t have even two minutes to myself”. And yet, experts tell us that the two leading health issues today are depression and anxiety, symptoms of not taking enough time for ourselves.
They strongly recommend that to achieve longer term health benefits and longevity, we must address these stress symptoms. This may be achieved through diet and exercise, but also by integrating activities into our daily routine such as meditation, relaxation, hypnosis and natural remedies.
It has been almost 20 years since I sought out meditation as an alternative to treating my panic and anxiety symptoms with various medications. Most of the meditation practices I learned had been through workshops, classes, and attending weekly groups. I quickly discovered that I had positive results in reducing the panic and anxiety attacks by using specific breathing techniques I had learned, and through daily meditations.
Eventually, I began leading and co-facilitating workshops, delivering presentations and providing individual sessions on relaxation. In 2006 I recorded a relaxation CD using the techniques of breathing instruction and guided visualization. I have received feedback from professionals who have indicated this CD is very helpful for people living with GAD (General Anxiety Disorder). This pleases me greatly, as my goal has been, and continues to be, to create products that help others to cope with stress and anxiety, and improve their overall quality of life.
That same goal or desire, soon led me to another discovery. The overriding comment I heard from people attending my classes and workshops was: “I just can’t find the time to take for myself!”
When I became rushed and overwhelmed, I would do focused breathing several times during the day. It really worked, and then the question came to me; What if taking 2 minute breath breaks, several times throughout the day, could mean the difference between feeling drained/stressed and relaxed/energized? The Two-Minute Tune-Up was born!
In his book, A New Earth, Eckhart Tolle talks about “Conscious Breathing” as a way to bring calm and create inner space. “By taking only 3 conscious breaths, it is possible to attain a calm awareness which leads to feeling more relaxed.”
During a Two Minute Tune Up, this is exactly what happens. We are able to shift from being outside ourselves in our busy-ness to inside where we can listen to ourselves taking those conscious breaths; they enable the body and mind to become more still, turning on the relaxation response, and providing a natural Energy Boost!
The absolute beauty of the Two Minute Tune Up is its simplicity and universality. Enjoy!
